Complete Evaluation

(http://www.scribd.com/doc/25167516/Complete-Evaluation)

my preliminary task!

points that need to be mentioned;

*It's small size, I decided to make it an easier size so it would be able to fit in students bag.
*Fonts are in handwriting styles.
* Black and white close up of a person studying- studying is a key aspect to good grades and tips on this is vital for some students.
* Most students age range from 11-18 like Starbucks, with free vouchers this would be banned to attract sales.
*SCH!-Colloquial,text language etc.

Points worth mentioning.
* Editor's letter-personal.
* Starbucks logo, makes readers remember that free vouchers are included.
* Fact File of a student.
* University & higher education, most students are very concerned about this.
* This week special column.
* Capital 'FREE's with page references.
*These are just some of the main points, others are obvious when looking at the magazine.

*This was created on publisher using a template from the mac programme I web.

Choosing images.

When looking back at my research I noticed that a mid shot or long shot is mostly used on magazine front covers, contents and double page spreads. Choosing photos was key as I wanted to ensure that my magazine looked as professional as possible and would relate to my target audience.

As my target audience was predominantly those who are still in some form of education, which was one of my reasons for my 'artist' was dressed in a uniform etc so it could relate to them. When taking my photos I made sure that they were taken in a simple but effective position.

E.g
This photo was taken in the 6th form library. Interestingly this was taken when I was 'playing around' with the camera so i could get used to it and it's functions. Straight away, after it was taken I knew that I would use this one as I like the informality of it, how my friend is simply leaning on the wall relaxed.

Composition of my magazine in stages.

Development of ideas.

I thought I would have a music download rather than a free CD as this meets my target audience requirements, as more than 90% of my audience have access to the internet at home, a download would be more suitable since it is this form of consumption that is become largely dominant.

The V festival is a popular events and normally in the upcoming months to this event, other popular magazines such as NME have the V festival line ups, so my having the 'inside scoop' which a event very popular with my audience would have my magazine more favourable.

Development of ideas.

This is what my final product will look like.
I am really proud of my magazine, i really worked as hard as possible using a range of programmes in order to make it look as professional as possible.

I decided that I would have 'Special K' name in a different from in order to make it a prominent feature of the page. I considered a range of fonts some are shown below. I decided to go with the one on my front cover as it was 'scriptive' and suited the artists genre and personality, along with being simple and readable.

Content of Interviews.

After looking reading many interviews in music magazines I have now found out what mine will have to be composed of:

*A brief introduction.
*Artists influences.
*Artists upbringing.
* Artists struggle to fame.
* How they achieved it.
* Romance- who they are currently dating.
* New songs/album.
*Where it can be purchased from.

All of these points are 'core' points and will need to definitely be answered, as they as the sole basis for the interview.

Plugs and Hooks.

A hook/plug are usually posted on magazine font covers for potential consumers to look at and tempt them to purchase the magazine or give them a sneak peak of what is inside, here are a few examples;

All of these hooks/plugs are mostly compoased of things that are benefical to the consumer or are thigns that everyone wants to know. For example free tickets to Channel 4 on the beach summer party, most people would like to go their, hence by purchasing the magazine it will improve their chances.
Other plugs may be based on stories that everyone wants to know about for example 'KATIE AND PETER WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.'
This will be a vital aspect of my magazine and will have to be thought about deeply if i want it to communicate with my target audience effectively and make them want to purchase it.

My audience and how I intend to meet their needs.

After doing various research on music magazine's and their audiences I have come to the conclusion that my target audience will be old- young adults/students (17-25) as I feel that the genre of music im doing is already popular within younger generation.

How will i appeal to my audience:
* Music and artists that are in current trends and are what most of my target audience listen to e.g. Lady GaGa.
* Parties, are popular with my age group.
* Famous legends come backs.
* Activities that most of my target audience will attend e.g. V & Reading festival.

How I will fill their needs:

* Competitions.
* Value for money.
* Exclusive interviews.
* Competitions.
* Up to date trends.
* Free give-aways.
* Good value for more.

Research and its role

*Research is a necessary step for me to complete before starting my magazine as I will need to know the common codes and conventions they use such as mastheads and cover issues, in order to make my magazine resemble those currently on the market.
A magazine itself is defined by the concepts and conventions it behind it. If want my magazine to have those attributes, so when looking at it straight away you can tell its a magazine because, of the obvious features such as plugs and hooks etc research is vital, as it can determine the outcome of my finished product, for example the codes and conventions used by a music magazine are completely different from a gossip magazine, which is why i must only divulge into the industry the brief stated and research in-depth the ideologies and concepts behind music magazines.

Research spider diagram with the things that I've learnt and other important stuff that shall contribute to the creation of my magazine.

Research in accordance to MIGRAIN!

Q

M- The medium is a magazine.
I- published monthly in the UK, very indepth writing etc.
G- Covering a range of music.
R- review section, featuring: new releases, music compilations, film and live concert reviews, as well as radio and television reviews
A- More mature but young people in the 20-45 age range approximatley.
I- It was founded by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth .It was first published in 1986, and distinguished itself from other music magazines at that time due to its monthly production and high standards. Its give the name 'Q' because it was thought by having a one letter magazine on a news stand it would attract attention.
N- E.g's include 'Q' logo always in the top left hand corner etc. and many more in the examples shown below.

Research in accordance to MIGRAIN!

M- The medium is a magazine.
I- Clubbing and nightlife style
G- Dance, House, Rnb
R- Having begun 1982 in the UK, it covers dance events, and reviews music and club nights. Mixmag has coined terms and phrases to describe genres and conventions within dance music.
A- Most young people 18-25 approximately.
I- The first issue was printed on February 1 1983 as a 16-page black and white magazine published by DMC — the DJ mail out service. Has an audited circulation of 30,159, beating most other magazines in its genre including DJ weekly.
N- The 'i' in the title always stays the same, the masthead is always in the same font, mostly same colour scheme used, same fonts used, always have free Cd's, nearly always have hooks on nightlife and clubbing, hooks and cover titles are placed in the same places etc.

NME Magazine:

M- The medium is a magazine.
I- The ideologies of NME; gonzo journalism, punk rock, youthful teenager lifestyle, gigs and live festivals. Also it is the longest published and respected weekly published music magazine.
G- Punk Rock/ Indie.
R- The idea of more individual and unique music, not everything is mainstream within this magazine.
A- I found this from a published atricle about NME, which i simply print screened and cropped.

(http://microsites.nme.com/php/mediapack/pdf/nme_media_information_full.pdf)

I- NME was first published in 1952, after the Musical Express and Accordion Weekly was bought by a London music promoter and merged the two together as New Musical Express. it was initially published in a standard paper tabloid format on standard newsprint, in November that year NME created the first UK Singles chart.

N- The Narrative of NME itself is pretty predictable, their is always the logo at the left hand corner and the artists are usually pale with indie/rebellious clothing examples are shown below. The contents page always stays the same, and so do most of the double page spreads.

Examples:
*Cover-line fonts are the same.
*"NME" is in the same place.
*Barcode is over the right side.
*Further hooks are placed on the left side.
*Band names say centre.
*Both shots are mid close ups.

Magazine Analysis- Q - Double Page Spread.

* This issue of Q contained a vast amount of double page spreads (24) so some things from other articles shall be mentioned in general.

*Image: A mid shot has been used so we can see her costume, pose and face as well as a glimpse of the background which seems to be tropical. Her outfit and her make up etc is in neutral colours and is very soft and suttle which sets the mood for the interview etc.

* The artists name appears on its own line, above everything else and has been increased in size and width.

* A introduction has been given which a informal name for Lilly Allen which has been highlighted in red.

*There are a lot of line acting as dividers.

*Enlarged quotes placed in the middle of the interview.

* " How the devil are you?" informal talk.

* "I'm alright..." Her response highlights in red and is the start of the interview.

* Questions are bolded.

* Her tattoo can be seen clearly and might be a conversation topic.

* Picture slogan below- funny.

* Her nickname in this interview can convey the genre of music she sings.

* Reference to artists of the century, again it was on the cover and this is an interview from it. As it is a special feature it needs to be mentioned.

* A breakdown of her career good, not too much writing still readable.

*Overall there is not too much writing on the page.

* Columns used.

* Interviewer's name has been placed in the divider.

Magazine Analysis- Q - Contents

* Q contents presented in a red box Q is still in white like on the cover, contents in neat Black average sized front, most likely Times New Roman.

* A snapshot of the cover has been placed within the contents page.

* Artists of the century a special feature giving its own grey box this stands out due to it being in the centre of the page and grey most other articles in the contents are on white backgrounds.

* Neat and Tidy, presented well, structured.

* Regulars are located at the right side of the contents as they are not as important as the 'special one off' features.

* Articles names in either black or red bold writing and the number neatly placed beside them with a '|' acting as a divider.

* A brief explanation or quote situated below, gripping the reader.

* Review at the bottom with a picture and brief introduction, the picture connotes the genre of the music which has been reviewed.

* Evidence of their articles has been posted in the lower right hand corner.

* Plain fonts used.

* Multiple lines in underlining.

* PLUS: in read and capitals indicating good value for money, and that there even more than you have seen here!

* Issue number placed above regulars in large red front (282). This big issue number is evidence to show that this is a very successful magazine.

* Thick & thin lines are being used as dividers in order to space words and articles out so its easier to read.

* "Q" is being used allot like Q contents, Q50 etc, appears to be very dominant.

Magazine Analysis- Q front cover.

*Selling line at the top portrays its dominance in the market and its popularity.

* "Q" elegant and sleek positioned in the corner of the page.

* Artists- in script writing and Century in plain, these two towards are giving their own lines unlike OF and The which have been positioned on top of each other. This is because these are the key words and it is these which need to stand out.

* Century is a very long time and has a dramatic affect.

*Starring.... Everyone" pause making it more dramatic, Everyone, its over the top, highlighted in red, bold...a statement. It's a big deal.

*'Open up...' makes you want to buy it, it's tempting.

*Artists on the cover, there 11 hinting at its huge contents, all of the characters are taken in long shots so we are able to see their full body and outfits, in some cases such as Amy Winehouse they portray her genre of music.

*A reflecting effect has been used on the floor, making things appear more swift and gentle.

*All eyes are at viewing level.

* Interestingly most are males, an example of a gender dominant magazine.

* 'Exclusive' at the bottom meaning its limited, and only available with this magazine.

*Barcode positioned bottom left, clear and readable not to small.

*All look informal, even though some of the artists are wearing suits they may be wearing trainers, hands in pockets or on hips etc.

* Minimal but effective!

*Not many hooks and plugs, this may be due to Q already being a dominant magazine within the industry not needing to constantly appeal to audiences?

magazine Analysis- Mix Mag- Double page spread.

*Unfortunately I could not choose the David Guetta article as it was more than 2 pages, although I did come across a Dizzee Rascal interview, with is spread over two pages.

* The heading is in black bold font with regular commas and pauses, the artists name has been highlight in pink making it stand out in contrast to black.

* The interviewers name has been typed under the title in a small Arial font.

* A drop cap has been used in order to show where the article starts.

* The introduction of the interview is mostly composed of Dizzee Rascal's career, the introduction has been bolded and so have the interview questions.

* Colour scheme is very plane and simple.

* The strip at the top contains a bullet point which is unique and is the same colour as the artists name, which make the two relate to each other.

* VIP in block capitals bold and sleek.

* Q+A - Colloquial language.

* A small picture has been posted in what appears to be a snapshot form of another man who is mentioned in the interview.

* Page and issue numbers along with the website are placed at the bottom.

* A quote from the interview is placed on the following page around a picture. This quote is very obscure and bold, making readers wanting to discover what has made him say that.

* The picture itself is a mid shot of Rascal doing up his blazer by wearing a white site makes thing bold and his clothing portrays his lifestyle.

magazine Analysis- Mix Mag- Contents Page.

* Contents page contains a black page, in which mostly white font has been placed in order to make things more bolder.

* A large picture of a party take up most of the contents page, under it a page reference is placed in large numbers making it easy to flick to the page you won't. Under a caption of a picture is giving which is about clubbing and night life.

* Type of font differs a mix mag logo has been placed in the top left corner, then the issue date, and CONTENTS in block writing.

* Interestingly in this magazine, not everything is listed in the contents, just the vital stuff and special 'features' that were listed on the cover. Their are only two categories VIP, and features. making it simple, clear and minimalist.

* Page references are either given in either block capital font, or small yellow number.

* Each 'feature' in the content is given a title and a little explanation what it is about, this is kept interesting as it is meant to draw the reader in.

* At the bottom more information is carried on about the FREE MIX CD. Track listings are given as well as a brief summary.

*Pictures are mid shots, which enabling the viewer to see the artists/persons outfit and facial expressions.

* Page references and photo credits are placed at the bottom and side of the page in small fonts not taking up to much font.

*Overall, I really like this contents page as it contains a lot of information but the conventions they have used enable things to appear spaced out, comprehendible, readable and very modern. The font they have used although in blocks is clear cut and simple to read.
